Optional Morning Music Club - Grade 4/5

This is an optional morning music club for Grade 4/5 students starting Wednesday Oct. 12 and running seven sessions until November 23. Students who sign up will be learning and preparing a video performance of a song that will be entered in the CBC Music Challenge.

Background:

When my children were little (they are teenagers now) I was always looking for quality children's music to play for them.  When I heard that Rachelle van Zanten (formerly of Vancouver based band Painting Daisies) put our a children's album, I bought it right away. The title track "Little Spruce" was one of my favourite songs and my kids loved it too.

When I saw this song on the CBC Music Challenge song list, the idea to do the song with Copperfield students started to sprout! Mr. Magowan was very helpful in planning this club which will be Wednesday mornings (a lunchtime club wouldn't work because of the new lunch schedule).

It is my goal that students who sign up with gain an understanding of all the parts of a song as well as skills to make music with others such as:

- setting a tempo that works for the song and staying steady throughout

- blending vocals and instruments

- instrument playing skills (ukulele, xylophone, recorder, glockenspiel)

- possibly some harmony singing

This is an optional club. Please read the information carefully and have a conversation before signing up. Please check school messenger and fill out both forms and turn in by Tuesday, Oct. 11.

June Happenings in the Music Room

It's time for some drumming! Throughout the school year students have learned about the categories of instruments (wind, string and percussion). We are lucky to have a beautiful set of djembe drums. It's important to honour the culture these drums are from (west Africa and specifically Ghana) so here a is video I am showing about how they are made. Students are playing the djembe drums, learning how to correctly achieve the high and low pitches and handing for several rhythms. The universal break (also known as 'chocolate mild and potato chips') is used to start and stop the drumming. Makaru is the most difficult of the rhythms we are working on as it required specific handing and is a complex rhythm. Grade 5's are finishing up their band project and preparing for their upcoming Grade 5 Farewell. Grade 4's will sing to them so they are working on a few songs as well. "Jack and the Beanstock" Musical

I want to say a huge thank you to the Copperfield Parent Council for their support in bringing the Alberta Musical Theatre Company to our school this past Tuesday afternoon.
