Red Winged Blackbird at Wildflower Pond!


 Congratulations to Kennedi in Grade 1, who was the first student to send me a picture of a red winged blackbird this spring! She won a Copperfield t-shirt and ball cap. The bird was spotted on the south side of Wildflower Pond on Tuesday, April 18 around 6:30pm. Keep your eyes and ears open for all the signs of spring in our neighborhood!

Music Update

 Hello Families, I thought I'd send a note to update everyone on what has been happening in the music room as each grade group has been doing different things! Kindergarten - preparing for Pink Shirt Day assembly on Feb. 22 Grade 1 and 2 - non-pitched percussion instruments     - students have learned to play many non-pitched percussion instruments like the triangle, claves, guiro, cabassa, hand drums and tambourines     - students have learned that non-pitched percussion instruments can be categorized into four groups: woods, shakers and scrapers, drums and metals     - students compared non-pitched percussion instruments with pitched percussion instruments (xylophones) and learned a short, three note melody on the xylophones (Snail, Snail) Grade 3 - RECORDERS!     - students are working hard to earn their 'recorder belts', learning proper playing technique and how to read and play the notation  Grade 4 - UKULELE's!     - stud...

Optional Morning Music Club - Grade 4/5

This is an optional morning music club for Grade 4/5 students starting Wednesday Oct. 12 and running seven sessions until November 23. Students who sign up will be learning and preparing a video performance of a song that will be entered in the CBC Music Challenge. Background: When my children were little (they are teenagers now) I was always looking for quality children's music to play for them.  When I heard that Rachelle van Zanten (formerly of Vancouver based band Painting Daisies) put our a children's album, I bought it right away. The title track "Little Spruce" was one of my favourite songs and my kids loved it too. When I saw this song on the CBC Music Challenge song list, the idea to do the song with Copperfield students started to sprout!
